The one day a year when it is actually acceptable to go out in togs/swimmers/bathers (whatever you want to call them) and thongs (the shoes… obviously) is fast approaching, and if you haven’t started planning for it yet, you’ll want to start soon, or there’ll be no snags for the barbie.
Now, as anyone who has celebrated Australia Day here before knows, it is best spent drinking beers in someones pool; or at the beach, if you happen to know of one that the tourists don’t know of! But if you are unlucky enough to have no friends with a pool, or can’t make it to a secluded beach, never fear, there are plenty of Brisbane venues specialising in all things ‘straya.
If you’re looking to head out and mingle on Australia day, these are the big venues in Brisbane doing something a little bit exciting to help you celebrate.
Fireworks and free music at Southbank
On Australia Day eve, Southbank parklands will be in the midst of their long weekend full of free performers in the piazza, and at 7:30pm, we’ll see fireworks make the Brisbane Skyline even more spectacular! Southbank also happens to have a massive man-made beach, and seeing as beggars can’t be choosers, it’s almost as good as the real thing. Celebrations begin on Saturday at Southbank, and will continue until around 11pm Monday; for more information, you can check out this link here.
Pig races at the Paddo
The Paddington Tavern, or as everyone calls it, “The Paddo” is back this year with their famous pig races, Sunday from 10am you can see the hogs go head to head, pretending they’re in the Melbourne cup. For more information, click here.
Capri Sundays at Baccus
The swanky Capri Sundays continue for Australia Day, this time with free gelato! What more could you want for Australia Day eve celebrations? Its got a pool, cold drinks and free ice cream, does it get any better?
The Normanby Hotel
Probably the most Australian way to celebrate ourselves, the Normanby on Australia Day will once again have their famous esky races from 12pm on the Monday. Triple J’s hottest 100 will be playing all day and usually the dress code is relaxed so thongs are acceptable!
The Pineapple Hotel
The Pineapple is always a good time, and on Australia Day, they’ll be blasting the hottest 100 and throwing a pineapple-throwing contest with a prize pool up to $750! Head on down if you want to throw some fruit and hang out with excellent music.
Archive is home to Brisbane’s best tap beers, and Australians love our beers. On Australia day Archive will be cranking the hottest 100 and offering up $15 Aussie burgers, as well as the hottest 100 craft beer countdown for those of you who are connoisseurs; so for a more chilled out day, head on over. Alternatively, Sundays at Archive are a brilliant spot to observe the Boundary Bogans in their natural habitat.
